When Newham Council consulted on its adopted local plan, the authority received 46 comments. For its Local Plan Review, the council boosted that number to 5,000. Publicity efforts included adverts, social media, multi-language leaflets, and a video narrated by local residents. Engagement took place via stalls, attendance at community events, and an online consultation platform. A series of workshops aimed to build relationships between residents and the council. The judges said this approach showed “a real commitment to reaching a wider population who usually do not engage with local plan discussions”.
