‘One Cowcaddens’ is a mixed-use residential-led scheme which represents the deconstruction and subsequent redevelopment of the former Buchanan House offices within the Cowcaddens district of Glasgow city centre. Within the context of climate change and the retrofit landscape, this process respectfully challenged the received principle that “the greenest building is the one that already exists”. Working with the local planning authority, the One Cowcaddens new-build project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving efficiencies and achieving a lower carbon energy generation than the retro-fit strategies which were considered. This process is now promoted as an exemplar by Glasgow City Council.
